Burning homosexuals in the middle ages stacked like faggots of firewood. COMPLETELY NOT TRUE! The term 'fag' or 'faggot' in reference to homosexuals is not in any dialect or language prior to 1850 c. After the Crimean war the Turks and Russians brought the concept of cigarettes (paper wrapped tobacco) to the spotlight throughout Europe and the Americas. Smoking cigarettes was considered effeminate and reserved for women, while men smoked Cigars or Pipes. Both sexes chewed tobacco in those times. Men who smoked cigarettes were called faggots smokers or faggers or TA TAT TA DA TA TA! fags! Thus the phrase.

A medieval historian friend of mine said that homosexuality, though frowned upon in the middle ages, was generally thought of as a social quirk and reserved for the rich who often would indulge in using young men or boys for entertainment. One examining the life of King Phillip of France or Richard of England would know this.

Also, one must note, an early cigarette company thought the middle eastern theme would be synonymous with cigarettes and used the middle-eastern theme for its brand, even until today. That's why there are Camel Cigarettes.

The reason why they use paper cigarettes was because the rosewood for pipes in the middle east was rare and expensive. While paper came from Africa and Russia by the boatload.
